Teacher's Assignment Alert

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS REQUIRING USE OF THE RIVERSIDE PUBLIC LIBRARY
PROCEDURE:

For class assignments requiring library resources, call the Riverside Public Library (442-6366) and make arrangement to implement one of the options listed below:

OPTIONS:

1. The public library will pull all books on the subject(s) and arrange for one of the following:

a. Change the loan period to a time frame designated by the teacher (1 day? 1 week?)

b. Designate that all books must be used in the public library for the duration of the assignment by placing the items on a "reserve" shelf.

c. Check-out books to the teacher for use in the classroom (under this scenario the teacher becomes responsible for any lost or overdue payments).

2. All teachers may bring classes to the public library (by appointment, please) for introductory bibliographic instruction and an overview of the available resources.

3. If the library is not given the assignment information before the students, the first few students in the library can check out all books on the topic. This makes it difficult for the remaining students to successfully complete their assignment.

ALSO AVAILABLE:

1. Computer workstations with CD-ROM access to newspaper and magazine indexes, encyclopedias and a variety of other indexes and full text data bases are available for student and teacher use.

2. Public library staff will be happy to prepare special bibliographies of available resources. These can be used to supplement class instruction and to aid in preparing class assignments.

An Assignment Alert allows the library staff to assist with special projects and assignments. We can put some material aside on the reserve shelf so information will be available when students come to the library. Interlibrary Loan takes about two weeks to order titles.
